Families and civic groups across Saint Anthony Park and nearby Saint Paul neighborhoods are watching a legislative package that includes automatic voter registration and restoration of voting rights for some felons.
Alpha News reported that newly reelected Secretary of State Steve Simon announced support for automatic voter registration contained in HF3/SF3, along with several other election-related priorities.
Under the proposal, eligible Minnesotans who interact with government agencies—such as when applying for a driver’s license—could be registered to vote or have an existing registration updated without completing a separate application.
What could change for Minnesota voters
Simon said automatic voter registration could add or update approximately 455,000 registrations each year. He argued that the system would expand access, improve voter-roll accuracy, and allow earlier screening of potential voters.
Critics said the proposal removes the individual act of affirming eligibility and intent to register. Dan McGrath of the Minnesota Voters Alliance argued that eliminating signed eligibility affirmations could weaken protections against registration by ineligible people.
At the time of the report, HF3/SF3 had only DFL sponsors. Gov. Tim Walz had said he would sign the bill even without Republican support, departing from a tradition cited by opponents of passing major election-law changes on a bipartisan basis.
Additional election-law priorities
Simon’s agenda also included restoring voting rights to felons who were no longer incarcerated but remained on probation, pre-registering 16- and 17-year-olds so they would become registered at age 18, and strengthening restrictions on conduct viewed as threatening election workers.
Republican lawmakers argued that Minnesota already provides broad access to registration, including Election Day registration. They also called for greater transparency and independent validation of election systems before expanding automatic registration.
